New talent to showcase in ‘Beauty and The Beast’ pantomime at LIT.

There is plenty to celebrate at this year’s CentreStage Productions Pantomime in the LIT Millennium Theatre, Limerick. The cast headed by stalwart Myles Breen as the hilarious Dame Mrs Potty is introducing new and emerging talent to the Limerick stage over the Christmas.

Hilary Burke is no stranger to musical theatre, but this year she has secured the title role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. ‘ We are delighted to be supporting local emerging talent’ explains Director Richie Ryan. ‘In the past we have introduced through our pantomime Amanda Minihan, Jessica Brey, Denise Broderick, Brian McCann, Liam O’Brien, Una O’Driscoll and Hollie O’Donoghue’. Last year we introduced to Limerick audiences Jamie Sheehan who recently played the Tin Man in The Wiz at UCH.’ ‘We are always delighted to showcase the fantastic local singing and acting talents’. This year we will also be featuring Raquel Rocca as the fairy Godmother. Raquel has just recorded her debut album. CentreStage will also introduce Piotr Matijczak from Poland as Guisseppi Diablo.

The cast will also include Conor J Ryan, who has wowed audiences with his Sunday nights at Dolan’s.

The bashful Beast will be played by Aidan Crowe from Limerick. Aidan has just finished a sell out run of ‘What the Dicken’s is Wilde doing Here’ in the Back Loft in Dublin.

The CentreStage KIDS, who recently performed with Fake That in UCH, will also feature in the panto along with the CentreSage TEENS and the Flawless Dance Groupe fresh after their RTE Toy Show appearance.

‘This years production will feature musical numbers familiar to everyone. The music will include ‘She Said, Waka Waka, Dynamite and Promises along with more tradition numbers from Beauty and the Beast’ under the musical direction of Bryan Meehan and Jonny Daly.

Audiences are reminded to note the starting times of this years pantomime. They are 2.30pm and 6.30pm.

Steve specialises in close up one on one magic and was a great hit at last nights Rainbow ball at the Strand hotel as well. Chatting with Steve he informaed me that he does a lot of Corporate entertainment gigs and also wedding entertainment for guests at the reception moving from table to table keeping everyone entertained with his own special brand of Magic and humor.

Speaking with Jaspreet Sahota who is part of Mid West Indian Irish Association (MIIA) based in Shannon who told me that - " MIIA is organising 'Diwali', an Indian festival of lights. Its one of the main festivals in India. We have been organising this event from last 2years in Shannon, but this time we are going a step ahead and doing it on a big scale. This year's event is in the South Court Hotel in Limerick on 13th november. There will be a gathering of aroung 500 people. Ministers from Shannon and Limerick are also going to be present at the event."

Mayor Maria Byrne is urging people to: Have Pride in Limerick City, Our Identity and Our History by rejecting the proposals to amalgamate Limerick City and County which abolishes the entity of Limerick City.

She declared: “Limerick City needs a boundary extension, taking in its suburbs so we can be a strong regional city of over 100,000 people,” she said. “If the proposals in the Brosnan report go ahead we will lose our city, our identity and over 1000 years of history will just disappear. Limerick is already falsely portrayed as Ireland’s fourth city as half the population of Limerick city officially live in County Limerick.

The Brosnan Report argues the need for a strong city and that strong cities drive strong regions but this is best achieved through an immediate boundary extension,” she argues.

The City Council believes that a boundary extension is better for Limerick City because:

Businesses Rates in the city can be cut immediately if the boundary extension is granted
Amalgamation will mean a weaker Limerick City
Investment in the city will fall if it is merged
Limerick needs immediate action-Brosnan will take years to deliver
Only a City Council will focus on the City
Who will speak for Limerick City?

Plans for The Limerick Toy Show are now well underway with Christmas fast approaching and tickets already on sale in Limerick. The Toy Show will be a yearly event showcasing toys and providing great entertainment for all the family with a host of local acts all signed up to take part.

‘The Limerick Toy Show’ is the brainchild of Jamie Daly. This promises to be a magical experience for both adults and children with local schools involved, lots of toys on display in the festively decorated venue, children demonstrating how the toys work, lots of well known acts performing and a monster raffle with some great prizes.

All money raised will be donated to the charities Limerick Youth Service, St. Munchins Community Center, Our Lady’s Children Hospital Crumlin and Barnardos.

Due to the Weather at the moment the event and dates have been changes.

HRI Launch Go Racing Kids Club Schools Initiative - Horse Racing Ireland

Horse Racing Ireland launched a new Schools/Racing Education initiative yesterday at Navan Racecourse (Tuesday 21st September). More than 200 children from St.Paul’s School came for the school tour and the children have been invited back with their parents and teachers for racing in Navan this Saturday 25th September.
This was the first of 6 Schools days planned for 2010, the other 5 dates are:

• Wednesday 28th September – Dundalk (racing on 3rd Oct)
• Tuesday 5th October – Limerick (racing on 10th Oct – Munster National day)
• Tuesday 12th October – Naas (racing on 17th Oct – Birdcatcher day)
• Tuesday 19th October – Cork (racing on 31st Oct – Cork National day)
• Tuesday 16th November – Gowran Park (racing on 20th Nov)

Limerick Racecourse Photos.

Tamso Doyle, PR Manager for Horse Racing Ireland said: - “Horse racing is a sport in which Ireland can justifiably claim to be a world leader and the success stories of Irish Trainers, Jockeys and Horses is a source of pride around the country. Horse racing also plays a huge part in the Irish economy and the aim of the day is to educate the younger generation regarding horse racing and show them what happens behind the scenes at the races. We also hope that this initiative will lead to greater integration between racecourses and their local community, encouraging an affinity with racing and producing the racegoers of the future.”

As part of the tour there are 4 stations including:

1. A Trainer – brings a racehorse and describes how to train a racehorse, how their yard gets ready for a big race day, what a horse eats, how much exercise it must get, demonstrates how to saddle up, etc.
2. A Jockey - brings the pupils into the inner sanctum, the weigh room, where they get to see and feel all the jockeys gear from a saddle to the racing silks, their safety equipment including skull cap, back protector, goggles, etc. The Jockey will give a general talk about horse racing to the children, how he rides in a race and take any questions they may have.
3. RACE - the Racing Academy & Centre of Education talk through how to become a jockey, get a job in the industry, they bring a young apprentices to demonstrate their simulator on the day (some lucky students will also be able to sit on the simulator and feel what its like to ride a racehorse).
4: Racecourse Manager – brings the children through the preparation for a race day and on a tour of the Racecourse, including walking some of the track and seeing a fence/starting stalls up close and how the fences are made.

Despite the rain hundreds of people battled the elements and between the showers enjoyed a fantastic day of music dance magic and Comedy. The event organised by HMV Dolan's and Live 95FM. The acts who took part were - The High Kings, Fight Like Apes, John Spillane, O Emperor, The Boherboy Brass Band, We Should Be Dead, and Supermodel Twins. Bottom Dog Theatre Company, CentreSpace Studios, Art in Motion Dance Performance Company and Windings also Magic from Steve Spade. The event was fantastic and extremity well organised and congratulations to all involved for the first of what will hopefully become an annual event in the Limerick entertainment calendar. This years event raised funds for the Marie Keating Foundation.

Launch of Greyhound Benefit Night for St Gabriel's Hydrotherapy

Launch of Greyhound Benefit Night

Funds raised from the benefit night (Saturday 16 October in the new Limerick Stadium) will go directly towards the running costs of St. Gabriel’s hydrotherapy pool. Annually, those costs reach €150,000 and are sourced through various fundraising activities but the benefits of this hydrotherapy pool for the children with disabilities who use it far outweigh the yearly outlay. Children who are unable to walk as a result of road traffic accidents, cerebral palsy or other traumatic injuries can relax and move more easily and independently in the pool, where they experience confidence and freedom they otherwise find difficult to achieve. Parents of children with sensory conditions report improvements in their children’s sleeping patterns and social behavior, resulting in great enhancement to their family’s quality of life. They need to continue this work. St Gabriel's are very grateful for your support now more than ever.

Get involved. Come to the 2010 Limerick City Community & Voluntary Fair which will be held at Limerick City Hall overlooking the Shannon, on Sunday 12th September 2010 starting at 1pm.

While continuing to celebrate and promote Active Citizenship, Volunteerism and the ongoing partnership between service providers, community and voluntary groups, cultural and sporting organizations, this year a special emphasis will be placed on ‘Integrating Limerick: One Community Many Voices’.

This will be a great opportunity to experience the changing face of Limerick, support Regeneration, welcome New Communities and let the people of Limerick know what is on offer in our City. The Fair will provide an occasion to celebrate the people of Limerick as One Community with Many Voices through music, dance, fun and great food.

Opportunities for participation and involvement in the community will be on offer. If your club, group or organisation is looking for participants or volunteers, or you as an individual want to get involved in something new, this is the place to be.

The Fair will be a celebration of people helping people and neighbour helping neighbour. Studies have shown there is a huge health benefit to volunteering. Take the time to see what you have to contribute, get involved and make a difference in your community.

Exhibition Stands will be provided for groups and organizations to showcase their services, social histories, demonstrate their achievements and welcome new members. If you would like to reserve a stand please fill in a Stand Reservation Form and return it to mobriensmith@paulpartnership.ieas soon as possible. Stands are limited to sixty five this year. It will be a case of first come first served.

If there is anyone in your organisation who would like to perform, entertain or display their skills, please fill in the Performance Registration Form. Individuals can also register. You can also just turn up, look around, enjoy the entertainment, meet people and sample the delights of our BBQ which will celebrate the diversity in cuisine that is now part of Limerick.

The Fair promises to be a great day for all and will include activities for children and adults, ‘Limerick Talent’ and international entertainment, band performances, dancers, Wii Computerised Team Sports Programme for all to participate in, target penalty shoot out, kick boxing, face painting, martial arts display. The entertainment section of the day continues to grow.

An added attraction will be an Intercultural BBQ Cook-Off Competition. Teams are already being put together from Southill Community, Queen of Peace Community, The Limerick Youth Service, St Mary’s Community, St Munchin’s Community Killeely and St Munchin’s Community Ballynanty, Our Lady of Lourdes Community and Moyross Community.

A number of teams from the New Communities of Limerick have also agreed to participate. Food and supplies will be provided to each team. All teams must fill in the Intercultural BBQ Registration Form.

Let’s make this a day to remember. Sunshine is on order. Stands, food, entertainment and sporting activities will be provided FREE OF CHARGE. Get involved. Give your support to Limerick Regeneration and Integrating Limerick: One Community Many Voices.

Great turnout this evening for the Thomond Swim. In its second year since it's revival the Thomond Swim with the help of the Limerick Masters is now a major event in the Limerick Calendar. With Limerick Mayor Maria Byrne doing the honors at the start. The Course for the Thomond Swim was changed slightly with the finish line now near the steps opposite the starting point. A lot more people both swimming and watching the event.

Siobhán & Trish will travel to Haiti on 23rd Oct for a week to help build badly needed housing in Gonaieve. The girls would like to thank everyone who have supported them so far especially the bands.

The new St Francis Community Garden opened today in Delmege Park in Moyross which was the work of the local community and the Franciscan Friars of Renewal who do amazing work in the locality. The garden is located opposite the Friary and will offer locals a chance to work on their green thumbs with vegetables herbs and fruit trees already in place.

The opening of the garden by Keith Earles and Leanne Moore was followed by the Stars in the Hood rap battle. The event was organised by Jamie Daly.

First of the Monthly Craft Markets at Limericks Milk Market Today.

Today marks the first of the monthly craft markets that will run in Limericks new Milk Market. There are a wide variety of crafts available from turned wood and Silver Jewelery to a huge range of Knitted products and there should be somthing for everyone. Live music is provided on the top deck with beautyful Harp Music being played while I was there this morning. This leant a really nice atmosphere to the marked and is an indication of the acoustics that should be utalised for concerts and more music in the future. Photos below and the market is open till 7 so you still have a chance to get along or plan to get there next month!

Limerick Tunnel Now Open! - Video of first drive through Limerick Tunnel

The Tunnel finally opened today and I got to take my first drive throught it on my way back from a video shoot in Fanore Co. Clare. I have to say that it saved me a lot of time as the video shows it was straight through to the roundabout near the Cement Factory and that would normally have taken at least half an hour depending on traffic.

So I give a thumbs up to the new Tunnel!

Fantastic Weather this evening made the final Twilight Racing event even better. A huge crowd enjoyed the racing the weather and the great food. After the racing finished the amazing Camembert Quartet rocked the joint and had everyone up dancing and singing along. They really know how to work the crowd!

Limerick’s first ever Mardi Gras Street Party is set to happen on Saturday 3rd July and it looks like it’s going to a fantastic addition to the city’s event calendar. The fun starts at with music on the main stage. The streets will all become a pedestrian only zone for the night and drinking from plastic containers only will be permitted on the streets. Containers will be provided by all participating venues. There is a host of entertainment arranged for the day including a Carnival Parade, bands, Dj’s and an appearance from the award winning LUXe performers as they bring the true spirit of Mardi Gras through the streets of the Market Quarter. All of the local businesses involved in the organisation of the event which include The Bailey, Phil Flannery’s Bar, O Connell’s Bar, The Cuckoo Box, Smyth’s Bar & Icon Nite Club, Flannery’s Bar (Upper Denmark St) Angel Lane Nite Club & Molly’s will be offering something special on the night in the form of entertainment and some BBQ’s thrown in for good measure.

Can you pop, lock, break or just dance with attitude and soul?

RTÉ is looking for Ireland’s hottest hip hop dancers to form a new dance group and feature in a new 10 part TV series called ‘Super Crew’, which will follow their journey from audition to stage.

The winning crew of selected individuals will be mentored and choreographed by top names from the world of hip hop and get to perform in the Olympia pantomime this Christmas alongside pop sensations JEDWARD.

We are travelling to the four provinces this Summer and holding OPEN AUDITIONS in Limerick, on Wednesday, 30^th June (from 10am) in the Clarion Hotel, Steamboat Quay, Limerick.

The auditions will be OPEN TO EVERYONE within the age group on the day. It is not necessary to apply in advance. Dancers will be asked to freestyle individually to music of our choice.

NB. A parent/guardian must sign a release form for all those auditioning. U-16’s must be accompanied by an adult.

Twilight Racing Fri 19th June - Republic of Loose at Limerick Racecourse

The weather this evening was a little overcast but cleared up nicely for a beautifully warm evening at the racecourse. A good crowd made for a great atmosphere and the evening was lively and lots of fun. I found time to partake of the amazing BBQ menu this time and the queue was a dead giveaway to both the quality and quantity of the food on offer. After finishing off my Gourmet Burger and a huge hot-dog I was ready for action! And the rest of the evenings racing proved to be very entertaining.

Then the rest of the evening till late was spent with Dublin own Funk Rocker's The Republic of Loose. putting our a fantastic mix of older tracks and some great new stuff in a perfect mix that kept the floor moving all night. All in all a great way to spend your Friday night. And for those with the energy the free bus to the Sin Bin was outside afterwards to keep things going till early Morning!

Update - Was a great evening of racing and entertainment. Great Food and great Music. Make sure to head along this week for more of the same but this time the band are Republic of Loose.

Africa Day Limerick will take place in the grounds of Limerick City Hall on Sunday, 30th May 2010 (for directions to the venue, click here). Irish Aid has chosen a food-related theme for its Africa Day celebrations in 2010, with a particular focus on issues such as food security and hunger.

The flagship Africa Day event in Limerick will be a fun, family-friendly day out, featuring interactive cultural and educational activities for both children and adults that celebrate and showcase the diversity of African cultures and societies.

Upon arrival at Africa Day Limerick, visitors will be greeted by the sights, sounds and smells of Africa. The African Bazaar will be a hub of activity, showcasing the food, music and unique cultures of over 20 different African countries. The Embassies Section will house displays by five of the African countries that have Embassies in Ireland, while in the Education Zone, visitors will be able to interact with development NGOs and learn more about their work in Africa and development issues through participatory, fun activities.

If you are looking for traditional African food and drinks, visit the Food Zone, where a wide variety of food - from all regions of Africa - will be on offer throughout the day.

Music will once again be a key feature of Africa Day, with performances from African and Irish acts on the Music Stage. And workshops - on literature, drumming and policy issues - will be available in the Speakers’ Corner over the course of the day.

The show is being held in the same location as last year on a 14 acre tarmac site at Unigolf, National Technology Park, Castletroy, Limerick.

Well Andreas has been invited to study for two weeks at New Yorks most prestigious Skidmore college of music this summer.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Andreas to develop his talent and fine tune his already far advanced skill as a Jazz musician.

We want to help him get there.

We are holding a benefit, a day of of good food and great music in Nancy Blakes on Sunday May 23rd.

The Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band were playing outside the tourist office at Arthurs Quay Park today as part of the May Music in the Park series of lunchtime concerts. The music was excellent and went down very well with the crowds in attendance.
The band under the baton of musical director Derbhile dePaor played some great classics which had all the children in attendance playing along and thoroughly enjoying themselves.
This was a great initiative from Limerick City Council and should be extended to carry on throughout the summer in Limerick. There is a wealth of musical talent in this city and these events are a great way to let the public and tourists hear some great music.

Munster will get down and dirty for its first taste of Mud Run as Ireland’s muckiest race heads south this coming June.

Model Sonya Coakley got down and dirty for the launch of the Munster Mud Run

The Munster Mud Run, which will be held at 11am on Saturday, 19th June 2010, takes place at Coillte, Ballyhoura Mountains, Doneraile, Co. Cork. The 5km forest track takes participants through mud pits, water holes and over a series of obstacles guaranteed to leave them dirty, muddy and smiling.

Registration for Munster Mud Run is now open for those with a sense of adventure and fun by visiting www.mudrun.ie. Cost of registration is €30 for individuals, while groups of four can register for €100.

Derek McKay of Mud Run Ireland said, “Munster Mud Run is guaranteed to be great fun and the Ballyhouras provide the perfect backdrop for the event. Mud Run is open to everyone from first-timers who want to try something different to those who train hard and want a good laugh.

“Our first Mud Run was hugely popular and people travelled from all over the country. We noticed those from Munster had a particular fondness for getting dirty and mucky so we’re really excited about the June event. Places are limited so register early!” he added.

Situated on the boarders of Cork, Limerick and Tipperary, the Ballyhoura Mountains are easily accessible; just 45 minutes from Cork and Limerick city centres. The region is fast becoming synonymous with outdoor adventure activities, which include mountain biking, kayaking, paragliding and equestrian sports.

Novelty prizes for the first male and female to finish will be presented on the day as well as prizes for the cleanest, dirtiest and first group to cross the finishing line. All participants will get a special Munster Mud Run t-shirt.

SpiritStore Catherine Street Culture Dig (CAT DIG). Residents and traders from Catherine street in Limerick city centre are participating with SpiritStore as co-hosts and instigators of a programme of cultural events to be enjoyed on the street over one weekend in May (7th-9th) .
To introduce SpiritStore's ‘Catherine Street Cultural Dig’ and to mark the opening of ev+a 2010, (March 13th) we will be serving the traditional Limerick dish, ‘Packet and Tripe’ at 6pm on Catherine street.
The inspiration to present this unique Limerick recipe in this manner is a homage to the continuous presence in the city centre of family butchers, the social history of Limerick as a 'Pigtown' and of course the ever present meat processing tales of Catherine Street.

Tallaght Choral Society was formed in 1967, when Tallaght was still a small village at the foot of the Dublin mountains. A group of singers came together under the direction of Fr. Donal Sweeney OP to form a church choir based in the Dominican Priory. Under a succession of music directors, the small church choir gradually took on the mantle of a choral society and now has a membership of over 100. The current music director Mark Armstrong was appointed in 2002 and under his baton the society has continued to flourish and now has a reputation as one of Ireland’s strongest choral societies.

The link with the Tallaght community remains strong, especially with the Dominicans. In December 2008 the choir performed a selection of Christmas music in order to raise funds for the Loop System for the hearing impaired which is now fully operational. The Choir also sang a mass in the Priory in September and sang at the Carol Service there in December.

Tallaght Choral Society has participated in many RTE productions and its successful collaborations have included works with the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra, the R.I.A.M orchestra, Belfast Philharmonic Choir and Liverpool Welsh Choral Union. In May 2007, it was part of a 500 strong choir performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Gerhard Markson. On Christmas Eve, 2007, the society was invited to sing for the RTE televised Mass from Mount Argus church. Their most recent performance was Mozart’s Requiem and a selection of pieces by Handel in the National Concert Hall in January which was well received by a full house.

The upcoming performance in Glenstal Abbey features Duruflé’s Requiem along with other assorted pieces and promises to be a memorable afternoon. The Requiem is based on Gregorian themes and as the monks in Glenstal are word-renowned for their plainsong the Abbey would certainly seem to be an obvious place to perform it. There is a great organ with fabulous acoustics – what better way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Malin To Mizen For The Carers Association -

Joanne Ui Crualaoich, an Ultra Runner, has kindly agreed to help the Carers Association raise much needed funds by running from Malin to Mizen Head on 21May 2010. She hopes to set a Guinness World Record for her run.

The Malin to Mizen Head route is approximately 350 miles. Joanne hopes to complete it in under six days which would set a Guinness World Record. That is 70 miles per day, each day - almost the equivalent of 3 marathons each day!

This 7 race National Hunt Card will feature the Supermacs Hurdle of €22,000 and the South’s Bar Beginners Chase. As we approach the onset of summer racing the entries for the day are sure to be high in number and quality. Limerick Racecourse are once again promoting the Supermacs Sunday to the GAA fraternity through a number of channels. Firstly, All GAA supporters are invited to wear their club and county colours to the racecourse and gain admission for a mere €5.

On the day we have the Cúl Camps promoting their summer activities with Cúl Camp organisers staging GAA games demonstration and activities at the Racecourse After racing we have the annual county final of the long puck competition where patrons can cheer on their favourite competitor.

Beast of Ballyhoura
The Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Weekend takes place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, Jul 30th–Aug 2nd 2010.
The event features the Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Race, a uniquely Irish 36 hour non-stop race across the ancient & magical surroundings of counties Cork, Limerick & Tipperary. Mixed teams of four mountain run, bike, kayak, abseil, orienteer & shoot, navigating the best route to win. Prepare to meet your demons during this event designed to push each team to their limits. The Beast of Ballyhoura incorporates the 6h All Ireland Inter Services Challenge to unearth Irelands toughest service men and women.
The Blackrock Challenge is on Sunday August 1st and covers a distance of 80km, 15km hill running followed by 65km mountain biking with navigation for markers along the way. The race is for people seeking for a tough challenge & incorporates 2,000 meters of height gain, all mountain terrain & significant proportions of cross country single track riding.
The Ballyhoura Blitz is also on Sunday August 1st. The race is for individuals looking for the experience of adventure racing. The race will cover a distance of 30 Km consisting of a 10km hill run followed by 20km of mountain biking on the world class Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails. National Sponsored Dog Walk for the Carers Association - Limerick Photos

The Jetland Shopping was the location today for the Limerick Carers Association 5km Sponsored Dog Walk.

As part of the first national dog walk to raise funds for the Carers Association it was a great success, Even the rain held off although it was quite windy. All in attendance were in good spirits and even the dogs got on with one another!

There were tiny dogs, Small dogs, big dogs and Huge Dogs in attendance and lots of families came alond for the walk as well.

Big Changes at the Milk Market in Limerick

I have been keeping an eye on the work at the Milk Market. It looked quiet for a while I guess the frozen ground was slowing things up but there was a burst of activity lately and on the way back from the Band Parade I noticed that a huge pole was now in place. On my way through town today the roof was pretty much in place!

It will be a great addition to Limerick and I am sure that the local traders will be happy to get things back to normal as soon as possible!

Fantastic St Paddy's day parade today in Limerick. With the largest number of people taking part in the parade for quite a few years. The parade took over 2 Hours to make it's way down O'Connell St with loads for the huge crowds to see. I have over 1000 photos of today to go through and they should all be uploaded this evening. The weather held off, except for a few sprinkles, for the parade this morning. The number of bands was way up on last year thanks to the trojan work from the organisers and Futurama Productions. There was a good turnout for the parade and it was very entertaining. Looking forward to the main parade later this week.

An amazing show this evening at Limericks Skyfest Fireworks Show. The time seemed to fly by and the crowd were in awe at the Fireworks Display which was visible all around Limerick City and also far out into
the county as well! This was most certainly the Largest Fireworks Show Limerick has ever seen with over 1.5
tons of Fireworks being used.

The rigging of the Fireworks is now complete and with 1.5 Tons of Fireworks all set it looks like it is really going to be a great show.

The Castle is rigged with lights and fireworks so try and get a spot where you can see it. Otherwise the high altitude Fireworks from the large bore Mortars will be seen all around the city.

I went along to the first few hours of the Hurt for Haiti Event in Bentley's Courtyard. All I can say is that it was an amazingly well organised and run event. Loads of the voluntary committee and members from the Red Cross on hand to ensure that everyone in attendance had a great time. All credit to the people behind the event who gave so generously of their time and talents for such a good cause.

The Music was also excellent and my only regret is that I could not stay longer! As the photos below will show it was a very Family friendly event and I am sure as the evening progresses a great time will have been had by all!

All money raised from the Love Haiti event is going directly to the Red Cross and will help those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

Description: Local musicians, chefs, and entertainers are staging a major city centre event to raise funds for The Irish Red Cross efforts in Haiti.

Limerick City; February 2010 O'Connell Street, Limerick is looking forward to an extravaganza of entertainment for a great cause this Sunday, 21st February

Over five floors of music, food and fun will be hosted by Bentley's, The Brazen Head and Isaac Taylor's.

All procees will be donated to The Irish Red Cross effort in Haiti.

Local musician's, chefs, entertainers and more will lend their talents to this day long fundraiser event, which kicks off at 3pm. 'We're delighted to welcome children to the specially organised kid's activities in the afternoon, and of course, the adults will be well catered for until the wee small hour's.

Throughout the day there will be a barbecue buffet with specially prepared foods and tempting delicacies and even a pig on a spit! A top floor healing space offering relaxing massages, and appearances by local comedians, personalities and maybe even a celeb or two!!

Here's a rundown of the days scheduled events :

Bentley's Courtyard:

From 3pm, we will be using The Courtyard of Bentley Barkers as the main stage for the day.

From 6pm, The Brazen Head will open it's doors and house more great bands, such as The 54 Club and Joe Browne and The Durty Dawgs and The Half Yards.

The Piano Bar

From 7pm, The upstairs piano bar in Bentley's will open up, Nick Carsewell will kick start proceedings and give way to Steve Hanks and many other Jazz cats throughout the night.

Isaac's Bar

From 9pm, Issac's Bar downstairs will start hopping to the sound of Limerick most well respected DJ's, The Roots Factory crew, Paul Tarpey, Tokin White Boy, DJ Lenny and Jon Greenwood to name a few.

The Board Room

From 3pm , On the top floor of Bentley Barkers, there will be a space dedicated to relaxing in a calm environment with Acupucturists,and range of complementary Therapists, including sports and Thai Therapists, on site and even a Sitar player.

When the healing is done and the good vibes have all been dispersed, a troupe of Traditional Irish Musicians will take over the top floor and get a good old session going!

As all this going on there will be plenty going on around the venue, a balOOon artist, face painters, and even a fire breather~!!

All proceeds from this event will be from donations and will all go to The Irish Red Cross to help with their efforts on the ground in Haiti. The situation there is worse than anything we could imagine and the people of Haiti need all the help they can get. This is our contribution.

Enable Ireland are holding their annual wedding fair on Thursday 25th February,

Running from 9:30am to 5:30pm in their Limerick store

which is located at -

They have approximately 90 designer wedding dresses and a selection of bridesmaids dresses also.

These dresses will range between 150-250 euro.

All proceeds of this event will go towards the continued support of the charity organisation, Enable Ireland.

Speakeasy Jazz Limerick - Extra Gig this Month

SpeakeasyJazz Limerick is hosting a one off, extra gig this month. We wouldn't normally do this but the circumstances call for it.

On Thur Feb 25th, We are delighted to have the very beautiful Sí gracing the Shannon Rowing Club. The club will prove the perfect venue for this bewitching songstress.

Sí is a singer, songwriter, harpist and pianist originally from Dublin but now living in Limerick. Her songs are sad little things about life, love, heartbreak and all those kinds of things. Sí has been gigging around the place for a while now and is currently recording her debut album with Fergal Lawlor from The Cranberries, due to be released in early summer.

Sí's guests on the night will be Laura Sheehan and Vertigo Smyth..
Laura Sheeran is a 22 year old solo artist based in Dublin. Her musical path began at the age of 15 when asked by friend Clodagh Simonds (Mellow Candle, current 93) to do some singing for a then embryonic project later to be known as Fovea Hex. Since then she has continued to sing with Fovea Hex in the studio and also for live performances (where she plays accordion and bowed saw also) along-side Cora Venus lunny (ICC ensemble, Yurodny) Kate Ellis (Crash ensemble) and Michael Begg (Human Greed).
Other contributors to this project include the likes of Roger Doyle, Brian Eno, Roger Eno, Robert Fripp, Percy Jones, Donal Lunny, Andrew Mckenzie, Matmos and Steven Wilson.
Laura's solo music is highly atmospheric, lending itself well for use in theater and other visual media like film.
over the past few months Laura has been putting the finishing touches to her debut record which has developed into a double album. in making this record Laura explored various musical places, deciding early on that she would abandon the idea of writing with piano or guitar she has been experimenting with many instruments she would never before have written for, for example the harp, flute and accordion. She also had a lot of fun writing for strings and of course did a lot of vocal experimentation.
Entitled 'lust of pig and the fresh blood' the album is due for release this year.

Straight out of Ennis, comes Vertigo Smyth.
This is normally a paragraph where you find out about Vertigo Smyth. However, it has proven quite difficult to get any useful biographical data out of the man.
We know for certain he is from Co. Clare and is an Aries. There is strong anecdotal evidence to suggest that he now resides in Limerick, or perhaps Clare, or even Galway.
Not much is known about his musical background but it is understood that he came quite late to music and music making. In the past few years he has supported such acts as Mick Flannery, Cathy Davey, Gemma Hayes and Juana Molina. On his recorded material he is credited with guitar, banjo, ukulele and keys but has been keen to stress that; "There is a difference between owning a multitude of instruments and being a multi-instrumentalist". He writes all his own material but finds ironing his own shirts quite a struggle.

Later in the night when the live music has been all played away, Ms.Skull will be waiting to take off, in her own particular fashion on the decks. Ms.Skull has a very broad repertoire of music and is eminently skilled at getting the room moving in time with the tunes!

As an extra one off gig, we would like to present 'The Lyttle Varady Quartet'!

On Frid Feb 26th we would like to invite you to listen to the sounds of David Lyttle and Andreas Varady.

Andreas Varady is twelve years old and hails from Slovakia. This young man is an anomaly. Andreas' dad Bandi, put a guitar in his hand first when he was two years of age and he hasn't looked back since. Andreas has a talent that has to be seen and heard to be believed. It's out of the ordinary to see such a young man play with this great musicianship, tone and technique, and still have a strong sense of his own artistic expression, not to mention he loves it!
Taking influence from such greats as Charlie Parker and George Benson, Andreas plays regularly with The Limerick Jazz Workshops and continues to amaze as he plays to a standard that takes most people years to achieve.

David Lyttle is a Jazz drummer based in Ireland. Self-taught on the drum kit since the age of eight, Lyttle also received classical training on cello but began to focus his efforts towards the drums in his late teens after taking a serious interest in jazz.
Lyttle has worked professionally in the US, Canada, Britain and Europe, with a wide variety of internationally-respected artists. In the Jazz world, these include Greg Osby, David Liebman, Jean Toussaint, Soweto Kinch, Matt Penman, Dave Allen, Jamie Baum, Jonathan Kreisberg, Louis Stewart, Robert Mitchell, Jacqui Dankworth, Ronan Guilfoyle and Michael Buckley, who features on 'True Story', Lyttle’s acclaimed debut album on his ‘Lyte Records’ label.
We'll soon be able to add Andreas Varady to that list.

Andreas and David will debut at The Shannon Rowing Club in late February. Playing with them on the night will be Martin Bencat~Double Bass and Bandi Varady~Bass.
It promises to be a stunning evening of stimulating and first class Jazz, you won't want to miss this one!

The earthquakes in Haiti have killed an estimated 110,000 men women and children. Countless amounts of people have been left homeless and without food, water or anywhere to turn.

The disaster is an abomination, and although we can't change what caused it, we can help a little with the consequences.We're going to hold an event in Limerick that will involve food, music, dance, performance and sport. We have people from every strand of society working on this, and so far nobody we've approached has paused for a millisecond before saying yes.

The generosity of people is simply stagggering. The event will be an all day family friendly affair with entertainment for smallies as well as grown ups! We will be taking over Bentley Barkers~upstairs, downstairs,the outdoor area at the back, and The Brazen Head next door.

There's a massive amount of space to fill and we will be filling it with some of Limerick finest Musicians, Djs and performers. We will be giving 100% of all takings to The Irish Red Cross.The Red Cross in Ireland is working closely with its staff in Haiti to ensure that emergency supplies are delivered to those coping with the disaster in the most efficient way possible.Noel Wardick, Head of the International Department, Irish Red Cross explained, "Red Cross teams in Haiti have been working since the disaster struck to provide tarpaulins, tents, blankets, hygiene kits, kitchen sets and jerry cans to almost 13,000 people, as well as distributing more than 2 million litres of water in Port-au-Prince and Leogane. Another 40,000 people will receive relief items in the coming days.

"The Irish Red Cross announced this weekend that it had raised over €1 million in its Haiti Appeal thanks to the Irish public’s generosity in the wake of the disaster. However, funds are still urgently needed.This is a very serious situation, the people of Haiti will need help for a long time to come. We need to step up and offer something significant to them, not spare change from the bottom of your pockets, something that will hurt you a bit.

A Fundraiser was on in Dolans Warehouse last night for Sean McGowan who is rowing the Atlantic for his charity - Soweto connection and also to raise funds for Concern's work in Haiti.

SongWriter Sessions @ The Locke Bar

The first SongWriter Sessions@The Locke Bar, will take place upstairs at The Locke Bar, George's Quay, Limerick 9.00pm January 21st. All aspiring songwriters are invited to attend and play there songs in front of a live audience. All types of music and singers are welcome, a limited amount of instruments will be available for use on the night.

The evening will features songwriters doing short sets of two or three songs. Also planned for future sessions are "Friends" nights where one writer invites friends to fill the night and "Special Guest" slots where an established songwriters will perform a set. There will also be an opportunity for getting a YouTube video of your performance made free of charge and uploaded to our site. Performances will also be recorded and broadcast as a Podcast at a later date. Host for the sessions are songwriters Brian Connolly, Chris Wood and Sean MacCleod and they hope to develop the venue as a hot spot for new talent in Limerick, plans are a foot to invite recording artists, producers, managers and publishers, anyone who may be looking for fresh new songs. SongWriter Sessions@The Locke Bar is to become a regular feature of the live music scene in Limerick and will take place every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Thursday of the month.

Many children need support in emotional literacy. Others have behaviour or mental health problems at some stage that prevents them from fulfilling their full potential.

Some studies indicate that 20% of children have some form of psychological problem (Venables (1983);Rutter, Cox et al (1975); Jeffers & Fitzgerald (1991); Porteous (1991) etc) and that 70% of these are helped through the use of psychological based therapies such as play and creative arts. The 1999 British government survey estimated that 10% of children have a mental health problem. It is likely that similar statistics apply to Ireland.
Play is now widely recognised as being beneficial in the emotional development of children. It has a therapeutic value. With the growth of play therapy, play work and the use of therapeutic play skills there is widespread confusion about the roles of each and the skills required to be a proficient practitioner.

Speakeasy Jazz Limerick still Swinging in the New Year

In 2009 Limericks alternative scene recieved a timely boost in the form of Speakeasy Jazz writes Andrew Curtain. The monthly Jazz club takes place on the second Thursday of the month and has proved a big hit with locals since it's inception

last April.
The headliners on Speakeasy's opening night were Insert Name Here, comprising of Bart Kiely, Joe Callahan, Bandi Varady, Dave Irwin and

Steve Hanks and they certainly provided a great opening act, playing all sorts of eclectic abstract Jazz grooves. The band were followed by DJ Peter Curtin(Cheebah, Spin FM) and the night set the tone of things to come for SpeakeasyJazz.

Some of Speakeasy' shows have been keenly ambitious with the organisers accomodating a 16 piece Jazz band into the Shannon Rowing Clubs intimate surroundings; The Savoy Jazz Orchestra, lead by Alan Ryan(RTE Lyric) had the club hopping to music from such greats as Glen Miller and Duke Ellington. Liam O'Brien(Rat Pack UK) lent his vocal prowess to the event and DJ Leon took it into the wee hours. Some of the other events included The Downtown Dixieland Jazz Band, Jazz Meets-a spoken word and freeform Jazz Collaboration, The David Irwin Ensemble, The Big Girls Blues Band and The Magic Carpet Trio. Each Session is completed with a set by some of Limerick's

finest DJs such as Brigadier JC, Vic John Junior, DJ Leon and Ms Skull.

The chosen venue for SpeakeasyJazz is the perfectly apt Shannon Rowing Club. The building sits proudly over the beautiful River Shannon, lends it's warm atmosphere to the event and provides the perfect surroundings to enjoy the music. For their Christmas gig, SpeakeasyJazz invited The Boudoir Sessions to hold a Vintage, Retro fancy dress Jazz party. The venue couldn't have been more perfect, it was like taking a step back in time with everybody putting in so much effort to make the night a success.

The organisers of SpeakeasyJazz are showing no signs of slowing down and are all set to kick start the New Year in style, and have invited 'Jazzypsy' to the floor to woo you with their eclectic mix of Latin and Swing, Blues and Jazz!

Jazzypsy are a local outfit, fronted by Louise Kiernan..a

charming songstress who regularly sings with the folks down at the Limerick Jazz Workshops. With Louise on the night will be: Bandi and Andreas Varady (~Bass and Guitar), a father-son duo who you may have seen wowing the crowds in the marketplace with their beautiful, graceful and very groovy Jazz guitar riffs...Dermot and Mike Hinchy (~Drums and Sax) these versatile and very talented brothers are mainstays on the Limerick music circuit.
You may hear touches of Bossa Nova, Be Bop, plenty of Swing and certainly lots of lovely oldies sung sweetly by the lovely Louise.

To round up the night, DJ Leon will take over and keep the dancefloor hopping to all kinds of radical Swing and Jazz tunes!
